K. Kavitha, the daughter of Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao, has approached the Supreme Court of India regarding the probe into the state’s liquor policy. The case pertains to allegations of corruption and irregularities in the implementation of the liquor policy in Telangana.
Kavitha has reportedly filed a petition seeking the court’s intervention to direct the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to conduct a fair and impartial investigation into the matter. She has claimed that the ongoing investigation by the CBI is biased and politically motivated and that the agency is being used as a tool by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to target the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) government.
The Telangana government’s new liquor policy, which was introduced in October 2020, aimed to increase state revenue by allowing the sale of liquor through government-owned outlets. However, the policy has been criticised by opposition parties and civil society groups, who allege that it has led to a rise in alcohol consumption and related social problems.
The CBI had launched an investigation into the matter in February 2021, following allegations of corruption and irregularities in the implementation of the policy. The agency had conducted raids at the premises of several officials and individuals associated with the state’s excise department.
