Pune is a city that is well-known for its love for mangoes. The arrival of the mango season brings with it a wave of excitement among the locals. This year, there is good news for mango lovers in Pune as there has been a rise in the arrival of mangoes in the retail and wholesale markets of the city. With the increase in arrivals, the prices of mangoes are expected to dip, making it an ideal time to buy mangoes.

Better Quality and Volume of Mangoes from Karnataka

According to Rohan Ursal, a commission agent operating at the Market Yard wholesale market in Gultekdi, mango farmers from Karnataka have reported better quality and volume of fruit this year as compared to the Konkan coast. The size and quality of the fruit have exceeded expectations, and farmers have confirmed that the supply will remain constant for the next few weeks. The market has witnessed a 10-15% rise in arrivals from Karnataka over the last few days, leading to a dip in prices.

Short Supply of Hapus Mangoes from Konkan Coast

While mangoes have become cheaper, the supply of Hapus or Alphonso mangoes from the Konkan coast is expected to be short this year. Mukund Joshi, director of the Konkan Hapus Amba Utpatak/Bikreta Sahakari Sangh, a cooperative body of mango producers and sellers, says that only 10-15% of their expected produce remains to be sold. The crop was hit by the double whammy of unseasonal rains and the early onset of heat in January. The unseasonal rains led to flower dropping, while the early onset of heat led to the early dropping of fruit in the orchards.

End of Hapus Season from Konkan Coast Sooner than Expected

As per Joshi, the Hapus season from Konkan is expected to get over sooner than expected. By the end of May, the Hapus from Konkan is likely to be over. Farmers who had harvested 1,000 boxes of five dozen each at a single go are now reporting just about 100-200 boxes each. Their estimates show that they have around 10-15% of the normal produce left for sale.

Cheaper Prices of Mangoes in Pune

The good news for mango lovers in Pune is that the arrival of mangoes from Karnataka has led to a dip in prices. The wholesale price of the product in the Pune market is around Rs 300-600 a dozen, while the retail price is around Rs 500-800 a dozen. Ursal believes that the prices are likely to drop in the next few days. This presents an opportunity for mango lovers in Pune to buy their favorite fruit at a lower price.

Health Benefits of Eating Mangoes

Apart from being delicious, mangoes are also packed with numerous health benefits. They are rich in vitamins A and C and also contain dietary fiber, which aids in digestion. Mangoes are also rich in antioxidants and can help protect the body against diseases such as cancer and heart disease. Eating mangoes can also help improve skin health and boost immunity.

Ways to Enjoy Mangoes

Mangoes can be enjoyed in a variety of ways. They can be eaten fresh or can be used to make smoothies, juices, and desserts. Mango chutney and mango salsa are also popular dishes that are easy to make and add a burst of flavor to any meal.
